Sabre men’s hockey rallies late to defeat Lions

December 4, 2017

Marian University men’s hockey (6-2-1, 3-2-1 NCHA) scored a pair of goals late in the third period to force overtime where the Sabres netted the game-winning goal 30 seconds into the extra period for a 3-2 final.

A Finlandia delay of game penalty on the final faceoff of regulation, only 2.7 seconds remained when the puck was dropped, set up the Sabres on a power play to open overtime where senior Hunter Stewart lit the lamp from the point for his third goal of the year.  Stewart’s goal was the first shot of the overtime and came with an assist from fellow senior Gianni Mangone.

The Lions would take the first lead of the game with a pair of goals 1:33 into the third period with the second score coming with a man-advantage.  Junior Nick Monfils started the rally with his first goal of the year at the 6:42 mark of the third, assist to sophomore Brock Weston.  Just 2:08 later, senior Curtis Lewington knotted the game at 2-2 with an assist from Stewart.

The opening two periods saw no scoring but the Sabres would hold a 22-8 advantage in shots.  Lewington led the Sabre offense with five shots on goal.  In the faceoff circle, sophomore Chris Deprez would win seven of his nine opportunities.

Sophomore Hunter Vorva (6-2-1) stopped 13 of the 15 shots he faced to earn the win in goal.

Marian closes out the weekend against No. 1 St. Norbert at home tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 2, with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m.
