Sabre men’s hockey offense sputters against LFC

January 22, 2018

Marian University men’s hockey (11-5-1, 6-5-0 NCHA) was shut out for only the second time this season falling to Lake Forest 1-0.

Marian controlled action for most of the game especially in the third period where the Sabres out shot the Foresters 18-9.  The Sabres closed out the game with a 33-21 advantage in shots with senior Derek Thorogood and junior Jake Howie each firing four shots to lead MU.  Howie also went 17-10 in the faceoff circle.

The penalty kill for Marian once again had a strong game holding Lake Forest scoreless on six power play opportunities.  On the other side, the Sabres would go scoreless on five opportunities.

Sophomore Hunter Vorva took the tough-luck loss making 20 saves.  Vorva was perfect in the second and third period with a total of 16 saves between the two periods.

The lone goal of the night came at the 6:24 mark of the opening period where the Foresters scored from the right circle.  The shutout was the third goose egg Lake Forest has posted on the season.

Marian closes out the weekend against Aurora tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 20, at 8 p.m. from Blue Line Family Ice Center in NCHA action.
