Marian University men’s basketball (1-1, 0-1 NACC) dropped their conference opener falling to Edgewood 88-62.
The two squads opened the beginning of the game to a 12-12 stalemate before momentum swung towards Edgewood with the Eagles scoring 13 unanswered to take a 25-12 lead with 7:30 left in the half. Edgewood led by as much as 15 in the half, but the Sabres were able to end the half strong and bring their deficit down to 38-26.
Marian slowly chipped away at the deficit to open the second half and trailed by as little as nine at 44-35 with 16:00 left to play in the game. The quick start prompted a timeout from the Eagles that helped cut into the Sabre momentum. With a 56-44 lead, Edgewood was then able to put together a 16-2 run to take command of the game and go ahead 72-46with 6:49 left. The Eagles were then able to cruise to the win from there with the final finishing at 88-62.
Junior David Britton and sophomore Tyler Gouin each had 13 points to lead the Marian offense, while senior DeAndre Ross chipped in 12 points off the bench. Gouin also had seven rebounds, while junior Nick Brakebush recorded four assists.
Marian closes out their series against the Eagles tomorrow, Sunday, Jan. 31, for a 5 p.m. tip.
