SEWANNEE / MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Marian University field hockey (3-4, 1-2 SAA) defeated Sewanee 4-0 before falling to Rhodes 3-0 in the first road SAA games of the season.
MARIAN AT SEWANEE
- The Sabres dominated from start to finish in a convincing win over Sewanee.
- Marian was held scoreless in the opening half but sophomore Jikke Biemans was able to open the scoring at the 40:35 mark.
- Fellow sophomore Merel Nagelkerke then gave Marian a 2-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter scoring with just 1:45 left in the quarter.
- Biemans added to the lead with her second of the game just 3:18 into the final quarter before Nagelkerke netted a penalty-stroke shot as time expired to put the final at 4-0.
MARIAN AT RHODES
- The Marian offense had a little tougher time in game two of the weekend against a Rhodes squad that was picked as the preseason SAA favorite.
- Rhodes would score two goals separated by just 1:55 in the second quarter to take a 2-0 lead.
- The Lynx then scored 4:32 into the third quarter to set the final at 3-0.
MARIAN AT SEWANEE
- Marian outshot Sewanee 35-3 and didn’t allow the Tigers multiple shots in any quarter.
- The Sabre defense posted its third shutout of the season in the victory.
- Marian has now outscored the Tigers 23-3 in three meetings all-time, all Marian wins.
MARIAN AT RHODES
- Rhodes held a 19-4 advantage where three of the four Marian shots were on target.
- The Sabres have played three road games at Rhodes and have fallen in all three.
