Marian University field hockey (2-3, 0-1 SAA) dropped its first conference game to Centre 2-1 in an overtime thriller.
- The game opened back-and-forth with neither team managing must on the offensive end.
- The Colonels would turn the tide and eventually found the back of the net off of a penalty corner at the 27:17 mark.
- This gave Centre a 1-0 lead going into halftime with the Colonels outshooting Marian 11-2 after the first 30 minutes.
- Marian came out revitalized in the second half and tied the game just 4:59 into the second half.
- Sophomore Jikke Biemans would score her third goal of the season on a corner with sophomore Eva Houtackers earning an assist.
- The 1-1 score held into the fourth quarter where each team had five shots but neither team could prevent overtime.
- Marian opened with possession in the first overtime session, but Centre was able to create a breakaway opportunity and scored on its first chance.
- Marian was outshot 21-10 but shots on goal were much closer at an 8-6 edge for Centre.
- The Sabres were able to create nine penalty corners, while Centre had 14 opportunities.
- Centre has won all three meetings all-time against Marian with the last two being decided by one goal.
- The two squads close the season series at Centre Sunday, October 8 at 10 a.m. (CT).
- This was the first overtime game in the history of Marian field hockey.
