Sabre baseball swept by Warriors to open NACC play

April 3, 2018

MILWAUKEE – Marian University baseball (4-11, 0-2 NACC) fell to Wisconsin Lutheran in a pair of one-run games with final scores of 1-0 and 7-6.

The opener of the series was a pitching duel that saw Wisconsin Lutheran walk-off the Sabres in the ninth inning.  Sophomore Zachariah Sandoval (0-3) was dominant on the bump for the Sabres taking the tough-luck loss.  Sandoval threw all 8.0 innings only allowing four hits and striking out five.

Offensively, junior Travis Slywka was the lone hitter on either team with multiple hits going 2-4.

The finale of the series was much different but one rough inning proved to be the difference as the Warriors secured a sweep. The Sabres jumped out early scoring a pair of runs in the second to take the first lead of the game.  A double from freshman Josh Gates gave the Sabres their first run of the day plating fellow freshman Logan Bosquez before another freshman in Sean Meyer plated Gates.

The Warriors responded with six runs in the bottom half of the inning with only one of the runs being earned.  The Sabres didn’t back down, however, as they put up another pair in the next half inning to put the score at 6-4.  After Walker and fellow senior Michael Pappas drew walks, Slywka ripped a clutch two-out double into center field to take advantage of the free passes.

WLC would tally another run in the bottom of the sixth before Marian continued their rally in the eighth inning.  Meyer once again would bring in another run with a double that scored Slywka to start the rally.  Junior Cole Clark then brought in Gates to put the score at 8-7 but the Sabres would strand the tying run at third base.

Marian would get a one-out single from Pappas in the ninth but were unable to complete the comeback.

Meyer had a big game on the offensive end for the Sabres going 3-4 with two runs driven in, while Gates also went 2-4 with two runs scored and a run driven in.

Marian is scheduled to next play nationally-ranked Concordia Chicago in their home opener Monday, April 2 in a noon doubleheader.
