Marian University baseball (10-7, 2-4 NACC) bounced back after a 5-1 loss to defeat CUW 6-1 in a NACC doubleheader.
The Sabres would strand 12 runners on base in the opener and struggled to find a clutch hit in a tough loss. The Falcons got on the board first with a run in the first inning and from there it was a pitcher’s duel. Neither offense would scratch a run across until CUW padded their lead with two runs in the eighth. The Falcons once again extended their lead with two runs in the ninth before Marian finally scored in the bottom of the ninth. Senior Matt Nordlund hit a single to drive in fellow senior Jake Falish to end the shutout.
Sophomore Nick Dugandzic had a multi-hit game going 2-for-4 at the plate. Senior Ty Peccioli (2-1) took the tough-luck loss going 7.1 innings allowing only six hits and three runs with eight strikeouts.
Marian broke through early in the second game and got a strong start on the bump to earn a split. The Sabres were able to score five runs in the bottom of the second with all of the runs crossing with two outs. Sophomore Michael Snow singled in Dugandzic right before Falish drove in junior Nick Bastien. Nordlund then put an exclamation point on the inning with a three-run homer.
The Falcons responded with a run in the third before Marian answered in the fifth. Sophomore Jonah Landowski was able to single in Dugandzic to close out the scoring for the game.
Senior Jordan Bock (3-0) went 8.0 innings only allowing the one run with six punch outs on the bump. Offensively, Nordlund went 2-for-3 with three driven in and two walks, while Dugandzic went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored and a walk.
Marian closes out the weekend playing at Lakeland tomorrow, Sunday, April 7, for a noon twin bill.
