Sabre baseball drops pitcher’s duel to open NACC tournament

May 10, 2019

MEQUON, Wis. – Marian University baseball (23-14, 12-10 NACC) couldn’t find a rhythm offensively falling to Concordia Wisconsin 3-1 to open the NACC tournament.

Neither side was able to scratch across a run through the first three innings with Marian stranding five runners in that span.  The Falcons were able to score first in the bottom of the fourth inning and expanded their lead out to 3-0 with back-to-back run-producing hits in the fifth.

Sophomore Sean Meyer started off the sixth inning with a one-out single and stole second base in the next at bat. Senior Matt Nordlund then provided a clutch two-out double to drive in Meyer and put the Sabres behind 3-1.

Marian would put a runner in scoring position in the seventh but were unable to mount a rally and eventually fell to CUW.

Sophomore Garrett Martin (5-3) took the tough-luck loss going 5.1 innings striking out five.  Junior Tim Dziergas had a strong game out of the bullpen tossing a perfect 1.2 innings of relief.  Offensively, seven different Sabres recorded a hit with senior Jake Falish recording the lone multi-hit game.

Marian will now take on Illinois Tech at 10 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, May 10, in an elimination game.  With a win, the Sabres would then play at 4 p.m. in another elimination game.
