ROCKFORD, Ill. – Marian University women’s basketball (0-6, 0-4 NACC) led at halftime but fell to Rockford by an 81-75 final in NACC action.
The Marian offense didn’t hesitate to get things started as the Sabres scored 15 of the first 16 points of the game en route to a 19-11 advantage after the first quarter. Senior Rachel Serchen led the way for Marian with nine points in the quarter and didn’t miss a shot going 4-4 from the field. The second quarter was much tighter with Rockford outscoring Marian 16-15 giving the Sabres a 34-27 advantage heading into halftime.
The Regents opened the second half strong using an 11-4 run to tie the game at 38-38 with 6:44 left in the third quarter. The two squads traded the lead back-and-forth until the final horn of the quarter saw the Regents with a slim 55-53 lead. In the final quarter, a Serchen jumper cut the Sabre deficit down to 64-61 with 6:10 left to play before Rockford used a quick 7-2 run to extend their lead out to eight points.
Marian wouldn’t go away quietly, however, as the Sabres were able to cut the Rockford lead down to as little as two with 1:40 left to play courtesy of an 8-2 spurt. The Regents were able to thwart the rally in the final minute going from the free throw line going 4-4 to seal the victory.
The Marian defense was able to force 30 Regent turnovers in the defeat, which translated into 26 points.
Serchen closed out with a game-high and career-high 27 points, while fellow senior Molly Magnus also chipped in a career-high 20 points. Another senior had a big impact in Sarah Schultz as she led Marian with 10 rebounds, eight of which were on the offensive end.
