Prairie Fire pull away from Sabre women’s soccer

September 17, 2018

Marian University women’s soccer (3-4-0, 0-0-0 NACC) fell to Knox by a 3-1 final in their final non-conference game of the season.

The Sabre offense didn’t produce many chances, but when the Sabres did they were high-quality opportunities.  After a couple of Knox stops, freshman Olivia Meerdink was able to net her sixth goal of the season in the 24th minute to tie the game at 1-1.  Meerdink was able to cause a one-on-one opportunity in transition and made the most of the opportunity sneaking a shot past the keeper.

The 1-1 score stood up until the 62nd minute when the Prairie Fire were able to retake the lead.  The Sabres put together one final push in the final minutes of the game but this allowed Knox to net a transition goal of their own in the 83rd minute to seal the 3-1 final.

Senior Alexis Peterson was the only Sabre to send multiple shots as Marian was only able to manage six shots, three of which were on goal, for the game.  Senior Danielle Deltgen (3-3-0) took the loss in goal despite nine saves on 12 shots.  Six of her saves would come in the second half.

Marian opens NACC play from Smith Field Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. against Concordia Wisconsin.
