Senior Alexis Peterson notched her fourth goal of the season as Marian University women’s soccer fell to Dubuque 2-1 in their home opener.
Peterson would find the back of the net just 3:38 into the second half after sophomore Shannon Coughlin received a pass from in the box and found an open Peterson. The assist from Coughlin was her first point of the season. The Sabre tally equalized a Dubuque goal in the fourth minute of the game. The Spartans would later earn a penalty kick after a foul occurred inside of the box that gave them the lead for good.
This would be the only bright spot as the Sabre offense was shut down after an even opening half. The Spartans finished with a 20-8 advantage in shots but the Sabres only trailed 7-6 in shots heading into halftime. Marian also put together a better shot percentage as they had six shots on goal to the Spartans’ five.
Senior Danielle Deltgen (2-1-0) suffered her first loss of the season making three saves for Marian in goal. Marian had three student-athletes record multiple shots in the defeat including senior Reilly Louko, freshman Olivia Meerdink, and Peterson.
Marian closes out the weekend at UW-Stevens Point tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 9, for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
