Perl signs professional contract with Huntsville Havoc

Derek Perl playing hockeyHUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Derek Perl (Toronto, Ont.) became the second student-athlete from the Marian men’s hockey class of 2017 to sign a professional contract after being signed by the Huntsville Havoc of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL).

“I am beyond excited to see Derek receive this opportunity,” commented head men’s hockey coach Lincoln Nguyen. “He is someone that over the past couple of years I’ve had the privilege to work with and build a great relationship with. In the two years I’ve been here, Derek has been a delight and someone a coach loves to coach and the guys love to have in the locker room. I know with Derek’s skill set and the tools he possesses he can have a career in a hockey. As a program, we are excited to see what he does and was extremely privileged to have had him come through our doors.”

Perl played in 108 games in his four-year career with Marian where he scored 14 goals and added 34 assists. The blue liner had his best statistical season as a senior with career-highs in goals, assists, and points (5-16–21). Perl ranks eighth in Marian history for assists from a defenseman with his 16 assists as a senior. He also had two power play goals and a game-winner in his senior season. In his final two seasons as a Sabre, Perl accumulated an on-ice rating of +21. The blue liner also earned a spot on the Team of the Week once during his senior campaign after a four-point weekend against Lake Forest.

The SPHL is a 10 team professional hockey league based out of Huntersville, North Carolina with teams located primarily in the southeastern portion of the United States. The league spans as far north as Evansville, Indiana and Peoria, Illinois. Perl becomes the third Sabre in the past two years to sign an SPHL contract.
