In a physical game, Marian University men’s soccer (3-5-1, 1-3-0 NACC) fell to Concordia Chicago 1-0 in NACC action.
The Sabres benefited from a hand ball in the box to earn a penalty kick in the 13th minute but sophomore Cade Klusendorf would be turned away after trying to go low and to the right. Just 5:01 later the Cougars would earn a penalty kick themselves after drawing a foul in the box. CUC would convert on their opportunity to take an early 1-0 lead.
Marian was outshot 6-3 in the first half but bounced back and outshot the Cougars 7-6 in the second half. The final 15 minutes were especially in favor of the Sabres as Marian pushed hard for an equalizing goal. Junior Kyle Klusendorf and freshman Juan Herrera each had quality chances that nearly missed as the Cougars were able to hold off the late Marian push.
Herrera led the Sabres with four of the 10 shots for the game and was the lone Sabre to record multiple shots on goal. Senior Ian Chacon (3-4-1) had another strong game making four saves with his only blemish being the penalty kick.
Marian travels to MSOE Wednesday, Oct. 3 for a 7 p.m. kickoff in NACC play.
