Penalty kick late sinks Marian against Albion

September 11, 2017

Marian University men’s soccer (3-1-0, 0-0-0 NACC) played a tight game against Albion but a late penalty kick lifted the Britons over the Sabres by a 1-0 final.

The opening half was a back-and-forth affair where neither team could contain possession for an extended period of time.  The Britons would manage to outshoot the Sabres 5-2 but each team only sent two of those shots on frame.

Albion was able to control the pace for most of the second half as they went on to outshoot Marian 7-3 and force four corner kicks.  The Marian back line was up to the task, however, and continually turned away the Britons.  In a transition opportunity, freshman Grant Langen had the best opportunity to find the back of the net in the 63rd minute, but his close range shot when wide of the left post.

It wasn’t until a hand ball was called in the box in the 77th minute that Albion was able to take a 1-0 lead.  With a much higher sense of urgency, the Sabre offense went to work creating several scoring opportunities.  The MU rush was not enough, however, as Marian was unable to find the back of the net to put the final at 1-0.

Senior Muhammed Abshir led the Marian offense sending two shots on goal, while junior Ian Chacon (3-1-0) tied his season-high on the year with five saves in the tough-luck loss.

Marian opens a three-game stretch on the road against Ripon Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m.
