FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Marian University, in partnership with the Adams-Friendship School District and Wautoma School District, recently received a Mathematics and Science Partnership grant, a federal grant administered by the Department of Public Instruction.
The 2013-14 grant awarded to Wisconsin partnerships included $1.76 million in three categories: new competitive grants to three partnerships; second-year continuing grants to four partnerships; and third-year renewal grants to two partnerships.
The Adams-Friendship Mathematics Partnership with Marian University is one of the new grants, where they will receive $145,865 to support professional development and curriculum improvement. The partnership between Marian University, the Adams-Friendship School District and the Wautoma School District was formed to provide 27 high school mathematics teachers with professional development and assist these educators to improve their practice.
“Effective professional development happens among a community of learners. Marian University will facilitate this community of mathematics teachers throughout three consecutive school years,” said Dr. Deb Kneser, principle investigator for the grant for Marian and chair of the Institute of Professional Development of Marian. “Each of the three years will culminate with an intensive two week institute, taught by Marian University faculty. The institute will address mathematics pedagogy, mathematics content knowledge, and mathematics assessment.”
To be eligible for a grant, the lead school district had to have at least 10 percent of students from low-income families; have a Rural Education Achievement Program or be a small, rural school district; or have student mathematics or science achievement that is less than 65 percent proficient based on 2011-12 statewide test score data. Funding for the Mathematics and Science Partnership grants is part of the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act, Title II, Improving Teacher Quality Grant Program. These programs encourage scientifically based professional development as a means for improving student academic performance.
