Pair of freshmen earn Sabre of the Month honors

Soccer and hockey playersA pair of freshmen in Olivia Meerdink of women’s soccer and Nikita Sokov of ACHA hockey have been named the Sabres of the Month for October.

Meerdink (Oostburg, Wis.) capped off a spectacular freshman campaign helping lead the Sabres to a second-consecutive NACC Tournament berth.  For the final month of the season, Meerdink recorded 15 points in just eight games with six goals and three assists.  Her best game of the month came against Alverno where she scored four goals becoming only the seventh Sabre in program history to record four or more goals in a single game.  The freshman also had a three-point game against Wisconsin Lutheran during the month and had a pair of game-winning goals.  For the season, Meerdink scored 14 goals with five assists for a total of 33 points.  At the end of the regular season, she had the seventh-most goals amongst all freshmen in the entire nation.

Sokov (Yekaterinburg, Russia) helped push the Marian ACHA hockey team to a 12-0-0 record so far this season with 18 points in just eight games.  For the month, Sokov would net eight goals with 10 assists and recorded a point in all but one game during the month with five multi-point games.  Sokov had a six-point game with two goals and four assists in the finale with St. Norbert but really found his grove at the end of the month.  The freshman had a three-point game in the finale with Depaul and followed that up with a five-point weekend against UW-Eau Claire to lead the Sabres to a road sweep.  On the season, Sokov has 25 points off of 14 goals and 11 assists in just 12 games.

The Marian ACHA hockey team returns home this weekend to take on Aurora in an NCHL series Nov. 2-3.  The opener of the series is set to begin at 7:30 with the finale starting at 2:30 p.m.  Both games will be live streamed at
