LOVES PARK, Ill. – Marian University baseball (3-5, 0-0 NACC) defeated Rockford 17-10 and 20-1 in seven innings to earn their first sweep of the season.
Rockford was able to score eight runs in the first three innings of game one, but home runs from juniors Jonah Landowski and Josh Gates kept the Sabre deficit down to 8-3. The Sabre comeback began in the fifth where the Sabres plated four runs to only trail 8-7. After Rockford extended their lead with a run in the sixth, the Sabres took their first lead of the game with an eight-run seventh inning.
The Regents were able to cut their deficit down to five at 15-10 in the eighth, but a two-run homer from junior Ricky Lee put an exclamation point on the come-from-behind victory.
Gates led the way for the offense going 3-for-6 at the dish with three runs scored and three driven in. Sophomore Mac Doherty (1-0) had a strong outing of the bullpen tossing the final 4.0 innings scattering six hits and allowing two unearned runs.
The offense kept rolling in game two for the Sabres as Marian scored three in the first inning, five in the second, and 10 runs in the third. Senior Michael Snow was able to hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to cap off the scoring in a convincing 20-1 win.
Five different Sabres had a multi-hit game with Gates once again dominating at the plate going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four more runs driven in. The duo of Landowski and junior Taylor Middaugh (2-0) allowed just one hit in the victory with a combined 11 punch outs.
All games against NACC South opponents are considered as non-conference this season.
Marian travels to Benedictine for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday, March 24.
