February 13, 2018

WINONA, Minn. – Marian University ACHA hockey (17-4-1, 14-2-0 NCHL) closed out the regular season sweeping Saint Mary’s with final scores of 4-2 and 3-0.

In a fairly evenly-matched game, the Sabres were able to battle on the road to take the opener behind a consistent offense.  The Sabres came out early scoring a pair of goals in the first 7:32 to jump out to an early 2-0 lead.  Tanner Duffney netted the first goal with an assist to Paul Kinder II, while Michael Bostwick scored the second with an assist to Brandon Mills.

Saint Mary’s battled back, however, as they were able to score the next two goals before Mills was able to put the game away.  Mills gave the Sabres the lead for good with a goal at the 16:28 mark, assists to Collin Wilson and Kirill Proskurin, and then iced the game at the 14:51 mark of the third period with an unassisted goal to close out a three-point game.

Shots on goal were even in the opener with each team sending 29 shots on goal.  Fredrik Radbjer was able to open the series stopping 27 of the shots he faced.

Radbjer then stood on his head in the finale as he was able to lead the Sabres to a 3-0 shutout.  The senior netminder stopped all 34 shots he faced as Marian ended up outshooting the Cardinals 50-34.

Despite the heavy advantage in shots, the Sabres were held at bay through the first two periods with a Duffney goal at the 9:30 mark of the first period, assist to Bryton Tomko, as the lone tally.  Marian was then able to put together a strong third period where they scored a pair of goals to put the game away.  Bostwick netted his second goal of the series at the 2:10 mark of the final period, assist once again to Tomko to complete his two-point game, before Christian Meisinger found the scoresheet at the 10:46 mark with assists to Dan Roe and Proskurin.

Marian closed out the regular season with 10 consecutive wins and enters the NCHL Hap Cup Tournament as the No. 2 seed.  The Sabres open the Hap Cup in Beaver Dam, Wis. Saturday, Feb. 17 at 5:30 p.m. with their opponent to be determined by the opening round of the tournament.
