No. 3 Marian ACHA hockey sweeps Southern Illinois

December 4, 2017

Marian University ACHA hockey (9-4-1, 6-2-0 NCHL) closed out a four-game stretch of non-conference action defeating Southern Illinois 4-2 and 8-2.

Three unanswered goals to close out the third period and a multi-goal game from Brandon Mills led the way for the Sabres to a close 4-2 win in the opener.  Mills would tally the first and third goal of the third period for the Sabres as they were able to rally from a 2-1 deficit earlier in the final period.  Sheamus Stoyle and Michael Bostwick assisted the first goal, while Austin Flores and Paul Kinder assisted the second.  Sandwiched between the pair of goals from Mills was a tally from Kirill Proskurin with assists to Dan Roe and Colin Wilson.

The Sabres would open the scoring in the first period with a goal from Christian Meisinger with an assist to Proskurin but a second period goal from the Cougars served as an equalizer.  The Cougars would tally a score early in the third period to take their first lead of the game but Fredrik Radbjer was able to hold off the Cougars the rest of the way to seal the win.  Radbjer finished the game stopping 31 of the 33 shots he faced.  The Sabres were able to out shoot Southern Illinois 45-33 in the series-opening win.

The Marian offense then exploded for eight goals in the finale where the Sabres scored the final four goals of the game.  The Sabres would hold a 2-1 lead after the first period but MU was able to out score the Cougars 4-1 in the second period and went on to score the only two goals in the third period.

Seven different Sabres scored goals to secure the sweep with Wilson being the lone Marian skater to record a multi-goal game.  Kinder paced the Sabres assisting five of the Marian goals, while Jake Weldon had a four-point game scoring a goal and assisting three other goals.  Roe closed out the game with multiple points scoring a goal and an assist.  Proskurin, Dan Liberko, Devin Chmura and William Newberry all scored a goal in the game with Bryton Tomko recording one assist.  Liberko’s second period goal proved to be the game-winner.

Marian once again held a heavy advantage in shots out shooting Southern Illinois 48-36.  Justin Davidson made 34 saves as he earned the win in goal for the Sabres.

Marian closes out the first half of the season taking on UW-Oshkosh Dec. 8-9 in NCHL action with the puck dropping at 7:30 p.m. each night.
