Marian University women’s volleyball (5-6, 1-1 NACC) opened the weekend with an impressive sweep of Dubuque with set scores of 25-23, 25-18, and 25-22.
Neither team led by more than three points in the opening set with a late run from the Sabres leading Marian to a first set win. The Spartans found themselves ahead 22-19 before Marian scored five straight points to take a 24-22 lead with sophomore Jamie Schrauth at the service line. Senior Alexandra Meidl then put an end to the set two points later with a kill.
The Spartans were able to take the lead again in the second 12-10, but similarly to the first set, the Sabres were able to rattle off eight straight points with Schrauth at the line to take an 18-12 lead. Schrauth had a pair of service aces and junior Sara Komosa had a pair of kills during the run. Once again, Meidl had a part in the finish of the set as she teamed up with sophomore Jenna Moehn to block a Dubuque attack to take a 2-0 sets lead.
The Sabre offense put together their best set in the third only hitting three errors to secure the sweep. After Marian took an 18-13 lead, the Spartans used a 7-1 run to take a 20-19 run before another Sabre rally. The Sabres used a 5-1 run to close out the match with Schrauth recording three kills during the run.
Schrauth had another big match for the Sabres with a double-double consisting of 15 kills and 14 digs to go with four service aces. Meidl chipped in another 11 kills to go with a .308 percentage, while junior Jenna Skroski led the back row with 15 digs.
Junior Amber Yahr assisted on 30 of the 36 Sabre kills with Moehn recording five block assists at the net.
