Marian women’s volleyball rallies to defeat MSOE in NACC opener

September 14, 2017

MILWAUKEE – After dropping the first set 25-19, Marian University women’s volleyball (3-2, 1-0 NACC) took the next three sets 25-20, 25-18 and 25-22 to clinch a win in their NACC opener.

The Sabre offense would only record 10 kills to nine errors in the opening set but the MU system found their rhythm for the rest of the match.  Marian and MSOE went back-and-forth to open the second set with the Raiders holding a slim 17-16 lead.  From there, the Sabres were able to close out the set strong going on a 9-3 run to even the sets.

Marian opened the third with a 10-5 lead but the Raiders were able to rally to tie the set at 10-10 forcing a Sabre timeout.  The timeout proved to be a big factor as it rallied Marian to a 7-1 stretch capped off by a service ace from freshman Jamie Schrauth.  The Sabres were then able to hold onto their six point lead all the way to the end with a 25-18 final.

Similarly to the third, Marian started fast in the fourth set jumping out to a 12-5 lead but the Raiders would not go away quietly and used a 9-2 run later in the set to take an 18-16 lead.  A Marian timeout once again proved to be a big factor as MU called for a break after trailing 20-17.  The stoppage sparked an 8-2 run to close out the match, which was capped by a kill from junior Alexandra Meidl.

The Sabres had their best offensive production in the fourth hitting .250 with 15 kills to only five errors.

Schrauth led the Sabres with a team-high 17 kills hitting .204 to go with five block assists.  Fellow freshman Cheyenne Henson and senior Amber Baker each had double-doubles in the game with Henson recording 12 kills and a team-high 21 digs and Baker assisting on 45 kills and 15 digs.

Marian travels to the Red Hawks Invitational Sept. 15-16 opening the invite against host Ripon and Saint Mary’s (Minn.).
