Marian University women’s tennis (5-2, 3-0 NACC) stayed perfect in conference action after a 9-0 sweep of Lakeland from Buttermilk Creek Park.
The Sabres had convincing victories in doubles action to open the day before Marian really showed their strength in the singles’ matches. Meg Hartzell and Emma Lewandowski took the top-flight for doubles 8-3 and Brenda Ordonez teamed up with Celeste Degeneffe for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles. Sarah Mereness earned her first collegiate victory as she won the No. 3 doubles flight 8-3 with Kyrsten Bruce.
Lewandowski had the most convincing win at No. 2 singles as she would not drop a set. Hartzell at No. 1 and Mackenzie Meyers at No. 4 weren’t far behind only dropping one set apiece in their victories. Kristin Houle and Erica Counter each had a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No. 5 and No. 6 flight, respectively. Bruce rounded out the sweep at the No. 3 flight with a 6-1, and 7-6 victory that required a 7-5 tiebreak to clinch the sweep.
Marian will next host Beloit Sunday, Sept. 23 for a 10 a.m. non-conference match from Buttermilk Creek Park.
