Marian women’s soccer trounces Lawrence in shutout

APPLETON, Wis. – Marian University women’s soccer (2-1-0, 0-0-0 NACC) scored a pair of goals inside the first 10 minutes as the Sabres easily defeated Lawrence 6-0.

Sophomore Alicia Balken opened the scoring just 1:42 into the match, assist to senior Karissa Preston, with senior Alexis Peterson scoring at the 8:52 mark as part of a multi-goal game.  Her second goal would come a little under six minutes later at the 14:34 mark to put Marian ahead 3-0.  Freshman Olivia Meerdink then scored her third goal in as many games to put the Sabres ahead 4-0 at the half.

Preston would add two more assists in the game after senior Reilly Louko scored in the 55th minute and freshman Kylie Hanley found the back of the net for her first career goal to put the final at 6-0.

The Sabre defense was dominant throughout the game only allowing two shots, one of which was on goal but was saved by freshman Amy Birner.  Senior Danielle Deltgen started the game and was credited with the win as she improved to 2-0-0 on the year.

The game was initially scheduled to be played at Smith Field but due to field conditions the game was moved to Lawrence.

Marian will next host Dubuque at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8 from Smith Field in non-conference action.
