MILWAUKEE – Marian University women’s soccer (6-9-0, 4-5-0 NACC) stayed in the hunt for a postseason berth with a 6-0 road shutout of Alverno.
The Sabres started the scoring early when sophomore Kylie Hanley was able to find the back of the net just 7:26 into the game with helpers from junior Shannon Coughlin and senior Allyson VanZeeland. Junior Alicia Balken scored late in the half with just 1:35 remaining to give the Sabres a 2-0 edge heading into the break for her third tally of the season, assist to freshman Megan Harbeck.
Hanley opened the scoring in the second half as well, assist to Balken, in the 56th minute for her second goal of the game and season. Coughlin and freshman Ashley Welk would score just 1:10 apart to bring the Marian advantage out to five before Coughlin closed out the scoring with a goal in the 76th minute. The final three goals were unassisted and brought Welk and Coughlin to 10 goals on the season.
The Sabre defense had a strong showing holding Alverno to just two shots in the opening half, neither of which were on goal. Sophomore Kylie Lange (6-9-0) earned the victory in goal.
Marian closes out a four-game road trip at Wisconsin Lutheran Wednesday, Oct. 23 for a 7 p.m. kick-off.
