Marian University women’s soccer (1-0-0, 0-0-0 NACC) opened the 2019 campaign with a convincing 4-0 win over Beloit from the Fond du Lac Soccer Complex.
The Marian defense would not allow a single shot in the victory over the Buccaneers and used a 32-shot first half to set the tone early. Senior Allyson VanZeeland opened the scoring on the season at the 10:44 mark from the middle of the box with an assist to freshman Kayla Bender. Just three minutes later, freshman Ashley Welk found the back of the net for the first time in her career with an assist to junior Shannon Coughlin.
Coughlin rounded out the scoring for the first half in the 22nd minute to put Marian ahead 3-0 going into the break. The Sabres added on one goal in the second half when senior Melissa McBride sent a corner kick into the box that found the head of sophomore Meghan Batzner and found the back of the net.
The Sabres finished with 49 shots in the victory with sophomore Kylie Lange (1-0-0) earning her first-career victory in goal. Welk paced the offense with 11 shots, while Coughlin had 10 shots, five of which were on frame, to go with her three-point game.
Marian has now won their season opener in four of the past five seasons with three of those victories being shutouts.
Marian closes out the opening weekend of the season against UW-Stevens Point Sunday, Sept. 1 at noon from the Fond du Lac Soccer Complex.
