Marian women’s hoops rallies in overtime to defeat Rockford 71-65

In a game that needed overtime, Marian University women’s basketball (2-4, 2-1 NACC) rallied to defeat Rockford 71-65 in NACC action.

The first quarter was a struggle for both offenses with the first point being scored after 5:14 of action.  The Sabres only managed one field goal in the quarter while Rockford took a 10-4 lead with four field goals made.  The Sabres took over in the second quarter outscoring Rockford 23-13.   After Rockford took an 18-13 lead, the Sabres used a 10-1 run to take a 23-19 advantage with 2:55 left in the half.  This four-point advantage held up as Marian took a 27-23 lead into halftime.

Marian extended their lead to nine to open the third quarter at 32-23 with 7:29 left in the quarter before Rockford chipped away at their deficit.  The Regents were able to cut the Sabre lead down to three at 41-38 heading into the final quarter.

The Sabres held onto their lead for most of the final quarter leading by as much as six at 51-45 with 5:30 to play.  The Regents then scored six unanswered to tie the game but Marian responded swiftly retaking the lead.  Marian was once again able to build their lead out to five with just 1:16 left to play only to have Rockford tie the game with a three-pointer with seven seconds remaining, ultimately forcing overtime.

Rockford used this momentum to jump out to a five-point lead in the first minute of overtime.  Marian responded, however, scoring the next nine points of the extra period, forcing a Rockford timeout, to take a 67-63 advantage with 2:01 left.  The Sabre defense then locked down Rockford in the final minutes only allowing one more field goal to earn a 71-65 win.

The Sabre defense was able to force 18 turnovers in the win, while the offense made 11 three-pointers off of 34.4-percent shooting from beyond the arc.

Freshman Madison Holdiman stepped up in a big way with her best game of the season scoring a game-high 22 points with six three-pointers.  Senior Carley Wilson chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds, while freshman Whittney Jackson added 11 points.

Marian remains at home to take on Lakeland Saturday, Dec. 7 for a 4:15 p.m. tip-off.
