Marian women’s hockey stumbles in final minutes of 5-2 loss to CSS

March 8, 2021

Marian University women’s hockey (2-8-0, 2-5-0 NCHA) was tied with St. Scholastica late but a strong late push gave the Saints a 5-2 victory.

The Saints were able to strike first for what proved to be the only score of the period.  The Saints controlled most of the opening period, but the Sabres were able to bounce back in the second.  Freshman Hannah Cunha was able to light the lamp at the 13:47 mark for her eighth goal of the season, assists to sophomore Briahna Bryant and freshman Brynn Weaver.

This tie wouldn’t last long, however, as the Saints were able to retake the lead at 2-1 shortly after.  Marian was able to record 11 shots in the period, their highest total of any period for the game.

A power-play goal from the Sabres tied the game just 1:34 into the period.  Senior Hannah Koniar found the back of the net, her first goal of the season, and she was assisted by senior Mary Clark.  The Saints responded, however, and scored three unanswered goals with the final score being an empty-net score to put the final at 5-2.

Senior Lindsay Lewison (2-5-0) made 26 saves in the game with 13 of her stops coming in the second period.

Marian closes out the regular season tomorrow, Saturday, March 6, traveling to St. Scholastica for a 7 p.m. start.
