HANCOCK, Mich. – Marian University women’s hockey (2-5-1, 1-3-1 NCHA) earned their first conference win defeating Finlandia 2-1.
All of the scoring came in the opening period with Finlandia scoring first 5:09 into the game. Senior Morgan Bolin then lit the lamp for the fifth time this season, assist to freshman Jade Williams, at the 16:46 mark to knot the game up. Just 23 seconds later, junior Mary Clark scored her first goal of the season with assists to freshman Rheanne Peigan and junior Maegan Shuck.
From there, the goaltenders took over with neither team finding the back of the net and the Sabre defense holding on to their 2-1 advantage for the NCHA win.
The Sabres finished with a 44-29 advantage in shots led by Bolin who sent 11 shots on goal. The Marian penalty kill also held the Lions scoreless on a pair of power plays.
Senior Maggie Cusey (1-2-1) bounced back after allowing the early goal to record 28 saves in her first win of the season. Cusey went on to make a combined 21 saves over the final two periods to preserve the win.
Marian closes out their series with Finlandia tomorrow, Sunday, Dec. 8, for a 1:30 p.m. (CST) puck drop.
