Marian women’s basketball nearly upsets CUW 71-64

Marian University women’s basketball (2-21, 2-16NACC) rallied to take the lead in the third quarter but fell to Concordia Wisconsin 71-64.

The first quarter saw the Falcons jump out early on the Sabres and take a 23-9 lead behind 8-17 (.471), and 4-8 (.500) from beyond the arc.  The Falcons were able to extend on their lead in the second half and take a 39-21 lead into the break.

The third quarter, however, saw the momentum shift as the Marian defense held Concordia Wisconsin to just one made field goal on 14 attempts, 7.1-percent.  The Sabres were able to score 15 unanswered points to cut their deficit down to 39-36 with 5:12 left in the quarter forcing a CUW timeout.  The Falcons extended their lead out of the timeout but another eight unanswered points gave Marian the lead at 44-43 with 1:02 left in the quarter.  A three-pointer at the buzzer from junior Carley Wilson, assist to senior Rachel Serchen, put the teams tied at 47 heading into the final quarter.

Marian would take the lead to open the quarter and extend that advantage out to 54-49 with 6:21 to play.  The Sabres would lead 61-59 with 3:58 left on the clock before the Falcons closed out the game with a 12-3 run and escape with the win.  CUW would go 10-10 (1.000) from the charity stripe in the final quarter to secure the win.

Marian finished with a higher field goal percentage shooting 24-59 (.407) from the field, and finished with a 38-18 advantage in points in the paint.

Serchen finished with a team-high 23 points, while freshman Paris Harris posted her third double-double in the last four games with 15 points and 15 rebounds.

Marian plays their final home game hosting Dominican Wednesday, February 13 at 7 p.m. in NACC action.
