Marian University women’s basketball (3-14, 1-11 NACC) continued their strong play of late defeating Rockford 51-39 for their first NACC win.
The Sabres out scored the Regents in all four quarters to defeat the Regents and finished the game shooting 17-58 (.293) with a 15-27 (.556) showing from the charity stripe. The Sabre defense also had a strong showing holding Rockford to 15-63 (.238) shooting from the field.
After Marian took a small 13-12 lead, the Sabres were able to use a 9-0 run that built their lead out to 22-12. Marian would not relinquish this lead the remainder of the game.
The Regents opened the second half strong as they used a 9-4 run to cut the Sabre lead down to 26-25 and 5:46 left in the third quarter but the Sabres rallied with a 7-0 run of their own to build the lead back out to eight.
The Sabres were then able to put the game away in the fourth quarter as they out scored Rockford 16-12 in the final quarter going 8-13 (.615) from the charity stripe.
Senior Brandi Bender had a big game for the Sabres with a game-high 20 points to go with six rebounds, six assists and eight steals. Junior Christina Jagiello had a team-high 11 rebounds off the bench in the win.
Marian closes out the season series with MSOE traveling to the Raiders Wednesday, Jan. 24 for a 7 p.m. tip.
