Marian University women’s basketball (2-6, 2-6 NACC) saw a late push fall just short in a 72-56 loss against CUW to close out the home slate for the regular season.
Similar to the opener of the series, both offenses came out firing and Marian jumped out to an early 5-3 lead in the opening minutes. CUW then put together the first run of the game using a 12-5 spurt to take a 15-8 lead. The Sabres were able to trim that deficit down to four points, but the Falcons were able to take a 24-17 edge into the second quarter. Both offenses shot better than 55-percent from the field with Marian going 6-10 (.600) and 5-8 (.625) from beyond the arc.
The second quarter saw back-and-forth action with the Sabres not being able to cut into their deficit but not allowing CUW to pull away either. This led to a 38-28 edge for the Falcons heading into the break. The Sabres closed out the half shooting 10-21 (.476) from the field with 7-14 (.500) from three-point land.
The Falcons looked poised to pull away as they were able to extend their lead taking a 60-46 advantage into the fourth quarter. CUW would score the first five points of the fourth quarter to build their lead to 19 before the Sabres mounted a rally. Marian managed to score 10 unanswered points cutting their deficit down to 65-56 with 4:53 left in the game. The Sabres were able to bounce back from this momentum and hold off MU, however, setting the final at 72-56.
Sophomore Claire Levendoski had the best game of her career scoring 22 points after knocking down six three-pointers. Freshman Serina Pehowski chipped in 13 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Marian travels to MSOE Friday, Feb. 19 for a 7 p.m. tip to open a four-game road stretch.
