Marian University women’s basketball (2-4, 0-2 NACC) were outscored 20-10 in the second quarter, which proved to be a big factor in a 69-54 loss to Alverno.
Three different Sabres scored double-figures in the loss led by senior Brandi Bender who had 14 points and four assists. Junior Rachel Serchen added 13 points and six rebounds, while junior Molly Magnus chipped in 11 points.
The three-point line also proved to be a factor in the game as Marian would go scoreless beyond the arc on seven shots, while Alverno went 9-22 (.409) from three-point land. The Inferno shot efficiently in the game finishing 27-60 from the field (.450).
Marian trailed at the end of the first quarter 18-15 but would rally to tie the game at 23-23 with 4:29 left in the second quarter after a layup from junior Christina Jagiello. The Inferno responded, however, rattling off a 9-0 run that put them up 32-23 with 2:08 left in the quarter forcing a Marian timeout. Alverno would go the remainder of the game without relinquishing the lead.
In the third quarter, the Sabres would cut their 13-point halftime deficit down to nine twice and managed to outscore the Inferno 17-16 for the quarter but couldn’t rally any closer.
The Sabre defense forced 14 turnovers in the loss but could only manage nine points off of the Alverno miscues.
Marian remains at home when they host Concordia Wisconsin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5.
