Marian University women’s volleyball (3-8, 1-1 NACC) fell to Maranatha Baptist in straight sets with set scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-15.
The Sabercats used fast starts in all three sets and never allowed the Sabres back in to earn the sweep. In the opener, MBU used a 9-4 start to take an early lead and used a 9-0 run later in the set to take a commanding lead. Marian battled back to cut the deficit to 24-20 with a 7-2 run but MU would not manage to get any closer.
The Sabercats jumped out to a 6-3 lead to open the second but the Sabres managed to tie the set at 10-10. Later in the set, however, ahead 19-16, Maranatha Baptist went on a 6-2 run to close out the set. An 8-3 run from MBU opened the third set, and similarly to the second, the Sabercats managed to close out the set on a 6-1 run.
The Sabres struggled to get their offense going only managing a .034 hitting percentage in the loss. The Sabercats also had some offensive woes but managed to serve up 10 aces in the win. Junior Alexandra Meidl led the Sabre offense with a match-high nine kills, while sophomore Jenna Skroski had a team-high 16 digs in the back row.
Marian next hosts Ripon Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. from Sadoff Gym.
