Marian University announces 2011 Business & Industry Award winners

FOND DU LAC, Wis. — The 29th annual Marian University Business & Industry Awards program will be held at the Marian University Stayer Center, on Thursday, March 3. After a reception and dinner, five awards will be presented following a keynote address on “Sports and Philanthropy: The Business of Giving Back” by Artie Kempner, director of NFL games and NASCAR races for Fox Sports and producer of the 2011 Super Bowl.

The Business of the Year award will be presented to Festival Foods. Receiving the award, Mark Skogen, president and CEO since 2006, is the third generation to head the Wisconsin business that started in La Crosse as Skogen’s IGA. Skogen practices servant leadership and is known for employee relations. Over the years, Festival Foods has grown into 14 stores with nearly 4,000 employees.

The Entrepreneur of the Year award will be presented to Mark and Patty Trepanier, the owners of the BackYard Grill & Bar and Whispering Springs Golf Club in Fond du Lac.The Trepaniers owned Trepanier’s Sunset Supper Club from 1981 to 1992. They sold the restaurant to raise their family, and later opened the BackYard Grill at the site of a former restaurant in 2004. BackYard has won the Taste of Fond du Lac People’s Choice Award every year since 2005.

The Economic Development Award will be presented to Mayville Engineering Company, Inc. (MEC), an employee-owned contract manufacturer with facilities in Mayville, Beaver Dam, Berlin, Neillsville and Wautoma. The company manufactures custom components and assemblies, and offers high technology coating services. In December they purchased the former Cummins Filtration plant in Wautoma and will reopen the plant in late 2011. The company was named to the 2010 Deloitte Wisconsin 75 list, ranking 57th among the state’s largest privately held companies on revenue and contributions to their communities and the state economy.

The Special Achievement Award will be presented in recognition of the partnership between the Fond du Lac Family YMCA and the Boys & Girls Club of Fond du Lac. This collaboration has expanded programming to better serve the Fond du Lac Community. They partnered with C.D. Smith Construction and Fond du Lac-area donors to build the 120,000-square-foot building that houses both organizations under one roof.

The George Becker Business Spirit Award is named in memory of George Becker, former president of Giddings & Lewis and a member of Marian’s Board of Trustees.

This year’s recipient of the George Becker Business Spirit Award is David Klumpyan, owner of Klumpyan Consulting, LLC in Fond du Lac. Klumpyan previously served Grant Thornton for 35 years as a member, and chairman of the national Grant Thornton Executive Board, as Fox Valley managing partner, as Wisconsin managing partner and as senior partner in the Wisconsin Practice. Klumpyan is chairman of the board of St. Mary’s Springs Academy. He is an emeritus member of the board of the Fond du Lac Area Foundation, and was one of the founders of the Fond du Lac County Cops for Kids Foundation.

The keynote speaker for this event will be Artie Kempner, director of NFL games and NASCAR races for Fox Sports and lead director for NFL Network Thursday Night Football. He was the world feed director for Super Bowl XLV in Dallas.

Kempner is a nine-time Sports Emmy winner. He has worked for Fox since Fox Sports began in 1994, formerly directing Fox’s NHL coverage. He previously worked for CBS Sports, directing college and NFL football, the Masters and PGA Championship, and Olympic hockey and skiing. Kempner played football at the University of Florida.

He also is on the board of Autism Speaks, the nation’s largest autism science and advocacy organization, and is the founding president of Autism Society of Delaware. He is a former board member of the Autism Society of America. He has been active in fundraising efforts for Autism Delaware and Autism Speaks.

The Business & Industry Awards Dinner helps raise money for scholarships for students in the Marian University School of Business.
