Marian University softball (19-15, 7-7 NACC) won a pair of five-inning games defeating Alverno 10-2 and 9-1.
The Sabres started off the day in a big way plating five runs in their first chance at the plate. All nine hitters went to the plate in the inning with junior Melanie Weigel highlighting the inning with a double that scored senior Alexa Rodriguez. A bases-clearing double from Rodriguez then put the Sabres ahead 8-0 after two innings. Rodriguez was at it again in the fourth with another run-producing double, which was followed by an RBI single from Weigel. Alverno would plate a pair in the fifth but were unable to keep the game going with a 10-2 final.
Rodriguez drove in five runs and scored twice going 3-for-3 with Wegiel also going 3-for-3 with a pair of runs driven in and a run scored. Senior Paige Rauhut (8-9) allowed just one hit over 4.0 innings and struck out seven hitters in the circle.
The hot bat of Rodriguez sparked the Sabres in the first inning of game two as she hit a three-run homer, her eighth long ball of the season. Marian added a run in the third before a big fourth inning sealed the win. An RBI single from freshman Evelynn Spaeth opened the inning before senior Peyton Loesch drove in a run. Weigel then put the Sabres ahead 8-1 with a two-run homer, her fourth of the season. Following a 20-minute rain delay, freshman Emalee Depa provided a two-out single to score a run, which set the final at 9-1.
Spaeth, Loesch, and Depa each had multi-hit games in the win, while Depa (10-3) also earned the win in the circle allowing just one run on four hits over 5.0 innings.
Marian closes out the series with Alverno tomorrow, Sunday, April 25 traveling to the Inferno for a noon first pitch.
