PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Marian University softball (14-8, 3-1 NACC) swept Lakeland 8-1 and 8-5 to conclude the first NACC series of the season.
Two big innings proved to be the difference for the Sabres in the opener of the twin bill after each team scored a run in the first inning. Doubles from sophomore Andrea Miller and senior Peyton Loesch highlighted a three-run second inning. Then in the fourth, junior Melanie Weigel hit a double that produced two runs to highlight another three-run frame.
Three of the top four hitters in the Marian lineup had multiple hits in game one with sophomore Kaley Ludvigsen going 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a run driven in. In the circle, senior Paige Rauhut (7-4) had another strong complete game allowing just four hits with seven punch outs.
The Sabre bats kept on hitting in game two of the day and Marian was able to hold off a late rally from the Muskies to complete the sweep. Marian was able to jump on the Muskies in the fourth scoring four runs with senior Alexa Rodriguez hitting a bases-clearing double followed by a single from sophomore Izzy Gonzalez. Rodriguez then drove in another run in the fourth to put the Sabres ahead 5-0.
After a pair of runs from Lakeland in the fourth, doubles from Miller and sophomore Julia Corona in the fifth extended the Marian lead to 7-2. Miller closed out the scoring for the Sabres driving in another run in the seventh inning. Lakeland was able to plate three runs in the seventh to bring the final to 8-5.
Rodriguez had a three-hit game to lead the offense with four runs driven in and a run scored. Miller also had a three-hit game driving in a pair of runs and scoring once. Sophomore Emalee Depa (6-1) returned to the win column after tossing 5.0 innings and allowing just two earned runs.
Marian travels to Concordia Wis. Saturday, April 10 for a noon twin bill in NACC action.
