Marian SAAC collects over 5,000 items for “Cans Across the Conference”

December 7, 2017

The Marian University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) collected a total of 5,035 items to be donated to the Fond du Lac Food Pantry as part of the NACC Cans Across the Conference.

Cans Across the Conference was created by the members of the conference’s SAAC committees in 2006 in an effort to do something together as a conference that would aid each institution’s respective community.  SAAC annually organizes the canned food drive as a community service competition amongst the 12 institutions in the conference. Each campus SAAC collects cans and other non-perishable items at their school during October and November to benefit a local charity.  In addition to food items, one dollar donated equals two cans, and toiletries (shampoo, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.) are also counted.

“SAAC has always done an outstanding job of improving each year on our total number of donations,” commented director of external relations Sarah Angelos.  “In partnering with Festival Foods, we have more than tripled our total from two years ago.  We are proud to take part in Cans Across the Conference every year to help make a difference in the Fond du Lac community.”

Marian finished fifth in the conference standings for the event as the NAC eclipsed 50,000 items for the first time since the inception of Cans Across the Conference.  The conference in total collected 55,188 items led by Alverno who collected the most items for an eighth straight year with 18,787.
