Marian men’s volleyball cruises past WLC in straight sets

Marian University men’s volleyball (6-0, 5-0 NACC) earned their fifth sweep of the season defeating Wisconsin Lutheran 25-13, 25-9, and 25-14.

Wisconsin Lutheran opened the first set with a 5-4 lead, but the Sabres quickly recovered going on a 17-6 run to jump ahead 21-11.  Marian would score the final four points of the set to take the opener 25-13.  The second set saw Marian jump ahead 11-7 and with junior Jacob Jurney at the line the Sabres were able to score 12 unanswered points to go ahead 23-17.  Marian was able to score two straight points to close out the set at 25-9.

The final set opened tight with the Warriors taking a 10-9 lead to start.  The Sabres then put together a strong run, however, using a 12-3 spurt to go ahead 21-13.  Marian then had a pair of kills from senior Isaiahs Mena and a service ace from Jurney close out the match at 25-14.

The Sabre offense dominated committing only nine errors to finish the match with a .379 hitting percentage.  Freshman Derek Wills paced the offense recording 10 kills with a .533 hitting percentage, while junior Liam Skinner added seven kills on eight attacks for an .875 hitting percentage.

The back row was led by junior Carzell Combs who had six digs, while fellow junior Zach Zelenik had 29 assists.

Marian hosts Concordia Chicago Friday, March 12 for a 7 p.m. first serve in NACC action.
