Marian University men’s volleyball (6-7, 0-2 NACC) defeated St. Norbert 25-14, 25-18, and 25-17 to defeat the Green Knights in non-conference action.
St. Norbert opened with a small 4-3 lead before Marian went on a 9-2 run to go ahead 12-6. The Green Knights had a response cutting their deficit down to as little as three before five unanswered points put Marian ahead by eight at 18-10. Marian was able to end the opening set strong scoring four of the final five points. The Sabres had their best offensive performance of the night in the set with 14 kills and .300 hitting percentage, while the Marian defense only allowed three kills.
The second set was similar with Marian holding a 7-5 lead before using an 8-3 spurt to take a 16-8 advantage. St. Norbert was once again able to rally to cut the Marian lead down to three, but an 8-4 Sabre run was able to close out the set. After a 5-5 draw to open the third set, Marian was able to take a commanding lead from a 10-2 run. The Sabres were also able to close out the match on a high note scoring five of the final seven points.
Sophomore Jacob Jurney recorded a match-high 11 kills with senior Jacob DeGroot adding nine and sophomore Liam Skinner chipping in eight. Sophomore Carzell Combs and senior Isaiahs Mena each had a match-high eight digs to lead the back row, while freshman Nick Stasch had three aces from the service line.
Marian closes out the weekend taking on No. 13 Benedictine tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 29 at 1 p.m.
