Marian men’s volleyball cruises past CUW for NACC Tourney bid

Marian University men’s volleyball (10-13, 3-6 NACC) clinched a spot in the NACC Tournament after defeating Concordia Wisconsin in straight sets with set scores of 25-13, 25-15 and 25-15.

The Sabre offense dominated finishing the match with a .293 hitting percentage.  Marian was able to come out strong in the first set where they had 13 kills to only one error on 20 attempts for a .600 hitting percentage.  The offense continued to churn in the second set where they hit .258 with 12 kills to four errors on 31 total attacks.

Not to be outdone, the Marian defense also had a strong match holding Concordia Wisconsin to a -.017 hitting percentage with no Falcon recording more than three kills.  After the Falcons hit .357 in the opening set, CUW was unable to hit for a positive percentage the rest of the match.

From the service line, Marian recorded a season-high 12 aces marking only the second time this season the Sabres have had double-digit aces.  Senior Aaron Wendels and juniors Ben Walter and Jon Smallpage each had three service aces, while sophomore Jacob DeGroot had a pair.

Offensively, Wendels led the charge hitting .450 with a match-high 10 kills and only one error in the match.  Smallpage added eight kills with a .312 hitting percentage with Walter also recording seven kills off of a .545 hitting percentage.

In the back row, junior Cullen Liberski led Marian with seven digs, while fellow junior Tyler Barnett dug up five balls.  Junior Joey Dittman assisted on 31 of the 33 Sabre kills.

Marian will next hit the road traveling to Aurora for a 7 p.m. first serve Friday, March 30.
