CHICAGO – Marian University men’s volleyball (8-2, 7-2 NACC) snapped a quick two-match skid defeating Illinois Tech in straight sets with set scores of 25-14, 25-19, and 25-18.
The Sabre offense didn’t have a problem with IIT all night in the win and come out swinging from the start. Marian jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the opening set and scored the final five points of the set to take the opener. The second set saw the Sabres expand on a 9-8 lead with an 8-4 run to go ahead 17-12. The Scarlet Hawks were able to trim their deficit down to two but Marian was able to hold off the rally. The third set was similar with a tight 15-13 Sabre lead to open before a quick 7-2 spurt allowed Marina to cruise to the sweep.
The Sabres finished with a .338 hitting percentage on the night and didn’t hit lower than .217 in any set. Senior Isaiahs Mena finished with a match-high 11 kills to go with a .435 hitting percentage. Freshman Derek Wills posted his third double-double in four matches with 10 kills and just as many digs.
Not to be outdone, the Marian defense forced 28 IIT attack errors and held the Scarlet Hawks to a .059 hitting percentage on the evening. Junior Liam Skinner had a pair of solo blocks and an assisted block to finish the evening with three total blocks.
Marian travels to No. 7 Benedictine for their final road match of the season Tuesday, March 30 for a 7 p.m. first serve.
