The Marian University men’s soccer (3-4-1, 1-2-0 NACC) offense found their stride as the Sabres defeated Lakeland 4-0 at Smith Field.
Freshman Brandon Mancini had his first career multi-goal game in the victory scoring in the 25th minute and the 89th minute. His first was unassisted and came after a scramble was caused in the box that he put past the keeper, and his second was assisted by junior Chris Nelson after he received a centering pass from the left side of the box and sent one to the right upper corner. Mancini now has three goals on the year and leads the Sabre offense.
Nelson had a goal of his own to give him a three-point game netting the first goal of the game in the seventh minute after collecting a rebound off of a shot that hit the post. The goal was his first of the season with freshman Jack Ruscheinski also scoring his first-career goal to round out the scoring. The Ruscheinski goal was assisted by freshman Juan Herrera, and after receiving a centering pass he was able to put a good touch on the ball and beat the keeper.
The Sabres outshot Lakeland 21-9 for the game including a 14-2 margin in the opening half. Mancini, Herrera, and junior Cade Klusendorf all recorded five shots to lead the offense.
Senior Ian Chacon (3-3-1) stopped all six shots he faced including five of which that came in the second half. All three of Chacon’s victories so far this season have been shutouts.
Marian remains at home to take on Concordia Chicago at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 from Smith Field.
