ST. LOUIS – Marian University men’s soccer (5-2-0, 0-0-0 NACC) scored first but a pair of unanswered goals led Fontbonne past the Sabres by a 2-1 final.
The Sabres needed only 13:51 to open the scoring when senior Muhammed Abshir notched his seventh goal of the season with a header from 12 yards out. Fellow senior Jose Luis Alvarado assisted the goal, his fifth of the year, but it was all the Sabres would manage.
Fontbonne managed to tie the game a little under 12 minutes later off a penalty kick and took their first lead of the game 10:23 into the second half.
The Griffins finished with a 20-7 advantage in shots for the game with Abshir being the lone Sabre to have multiple shots. Junior Ian Chacon (5-2-0) stopped five shots but took the loss in goal for MU.
Marian returns home Wednesday, Sept. 20 to open NACC play against Concordia Wis. at 7 p.m. from Smith Field.
