Marian University men’s lacrosse (11-4, 7-3 MLC) clinched their spot in the MLC tournament for the first time in program history with a 21-14 win over Beloit.
Each squad was able to net four goals in the opening quarter with Marian scoring two of theirs with a man-advantage to open the game. The Sabres then had a dominant second quarter outscoring Beloit 8-2. Marian had a stretch where they scored six unanswered goals with freshmen Erik Horman and Colt Robertson each scoring a pair of goals. The strong second stanza gave Marian a 12-6 advantage headed into halftime.
The Sabres added to their lead in the third quarter outscoring Beloit 4-3 before each squad netted five goals in the final quarter to set the final at 21-14.
Marian was dominant in the faceoff circle winning 27 of the 37 draws with freshman Vincent Mercadante going 14-for-16. On the offensive side, Robertson posted an 11-point game scoring seven goals with four assists, while Horman and freshman Finn Maloney each had five-point games.
The Sabres were able to win the ground ball battle with sophomore Tommy Gerlach leading the way with a team-high six ground balls. Gerlach also led the defense causing a game-high three turnovers.
In goal, freshman Johnny Estrada was able to earn the victory making 16 saves on 29 shots with 11 of his saves coming in the second half.
Marian closes out the regular season at MSOE Saturday, April 27 for a 1 p.m. start. The winner will earn the No. 3 seed for the conference tournament and play Aurora, while the loser will settle for the No. 4 seed and take on Concordia Wisconsin.
