Marian men’s lacrosse earns first program win

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – Marian University men’s lacrosse (1-5, 0-0 MLC) earned their first program win defeating North Central (Minn.) by a 19-6 final.

The Sabres had good production on both sides of the field producing 19 goals, with six coming in the fourth quarter, and forcing 22 Ram turnovers.  Marian opened strong with five goals in the first quarter with Nick Klotz scoring three of the goals and assisting another as MU took a 5-2 lead.  The Sabres then blanked the Rams in the second quarter and netted another four goals to take a 9-2 advantage into the break.  Connor Houlihan scored the first two goals, while Klotz added a pair of assists and a goal.  Landen Macco was also able to score his second goal of the game in the quarter.

NCU opened the scoring for the third quarter but the Sabres answered with another four goals to build their lead to double digits at 13-3.  Tommy Gerlach scored his first goal of the game to open the spurt before Klotz netted a man-up goal.   Macco closed out the quarter with a pair of goals, while Nick Garcia earned a pair of assists in the quarter.  Marian then closed the game strong scoring six goals.  Jeremy Eisele had a pair of goals and an assist, while Klotz and Garcia each had a goal and an assist.

Klotz closed out the game with 10 points off of six goals and four assists with Garcia having a five-point game with two assists and three assists.  Macco finished with four goals, while C. Houlihan, Eisele and Brandon Baschnagel all had four-point games with a pair of goals and pair of assists.  Tanner Duffney also had an assist in the game and Gerlach netted a goal to close out the Marian scoring.

Gerlach and Duffney each had strong games defensively causing four turnovers, while Rob Wilson went 13-4 in the face off circle with five ground balls.  Klotz and Gerlach led the way for the Sabres in ground balls with nine apiece.

In goal, Austin Finley (1-0) made six saves on 12 shots to earn the win in his first career start for Marian.

Marian has a quick turn around taking on Carroll tomorrow, Wednesday, March 14, for a 7 p.m. start.
