DE PERE, Wis. – Marian University men’s hockey (4-3-0, 3-3-0 NCHA) secured a sweep of No. 15 St. Norbert with a 2-1 overtime victory.
In a penalty-filled opening period, the Marian penalty kill held the Green Knights scoreless on six power-play opportunities. The Green Knights would take the first lead of the game, however, on a 4-on-4 opportunity, and this lone tally held up heading into the first intermission.
Senior Clay Cross evened the score on the power play at the 2:01 mark of the second period when he lit the lamp for the second time this season. Fellow senior Lawson MacDonald was credited with an assist as the 1-1 score held up heading into the third period. The final period of regulation saw the Sabre penalty kill hold off a pair of Green Knight power-play opportunities to force the game into overtime.
St. Norbert would be assessed a pair of penalties in the extra period and Marian was able to convert on the 5-on-3 opportunity. Senior Conner Blanck lit the lamp from the right circle in the final minute of overtime, assist to fellow senior Davis Ross, as the Sabres secured their first sweep of St. Norbert in program history.
Marian was narrowly edged out in shots for the game by a 34-31 margin with senior Hunter Vorva (3-2-0) making 33 stops in the victory.
With the victory, Marian has now won three of the last four meetings against St. Norbert in the all-time series.
Marian next hits the road for non-conference action traveling to UW-Stevens Point for a 7 p.m. puck drop Friday, Nov. 29.
