Marian University men’s hockey (12-8-4, 10-5-2 NCHA) opened the final weekend of the regular season with a 3-1 win over St. Scholastica.
The game looked to be headed to a scoreless tie after one period but the Sabres would net a pair of goals in the final 45 seconds. The first came from sophomore Dylan Hutton, his second of the season, with an assist from senior Lonnie Clary. Then with the Sabres on the power play, junior Clay Cross lit the lamp for the sixth time this season with five seconds left on the clock, assist to junior Conner Blanck.
Neither team would find the back of the net in the second period with the Saints opening the scoring in the third period. The St. Scholastica goal came on the power play at the 8:14 mark. Freshman Blaine Caton was able to ice the game with 1:13 left with an empty-net goal, his fourth goal of the season.
Marian finished the night with a 37-31 advantage in shots with junior Hunter Vorva (11-7-4) making 30 stops in the victory.
Marian closes out the regular season against Northland tomorrow, Saturday, February 9, at 4 p.m. from Blue Line. With a tie or a win, the Sabres will host the opening round of the NCHA Harris Cup playoffs.
