HANCOCK, Mich. – Marian University men’s hockey (11-4-1, 6-4-0 NCHA) bounced back defeating Finlandia 6-0 to close out the weekend.
The Sabres didn’t need much time as they netted three goals in the first 5:11 of the game with the first goal coming just 33 seconds into action. Sophomore Connor Blanck started the scoring with his third goal of the season with an assist to fellow sophomore Clay Cross.
Freshman Nick Ngwafusi then scored his first career goal with an assist to senior Cole McCaig before senior Derek Thorogood scored his first goal of the game with assists to junior Nick Monfils and sophomore Mitchell Baumann. Then near the end of the period, freshman Sean Condra became the second Sabre to score his first career goal, with assists to junior James Mathias and senior Curtis Lewington, to put the Sabres ahead 4-0 heading to the first intermission.
Thorogood did the rest of the scoring with an unassisted goal midway through the second period and his third of the game at the 14:49 mark of the third period, with assists to senior Hunter Stewart and Monfils, to close out his second hat trick of the season.
Marian recorded 12 shots in the opening period and 13 shots in the second period as the Sabres went on to out shoot the Lions 32-14. A total of 15 Sabre skaters recorded a shot in the win.
The Sabre penalty kill bounced back after a tough night to hold the Lions scoreless on three power play opportunities including a 5-on-3 chance.
Marian returns home to host Lake Forest Friday, Jan. 19 at 8 p.m. from Blue Line Family Ice Center.
