Marian University men’s basketball (2-1, 1-0 NACC) ended a nine-game skid in the all-time series against Benedictine with a 71-67 victory over the Eagles.
In a game that was tight throughout, Marian opened with a 13-6 lead only to see Benedictine rally to take the lead. The Eagles looked poised to take the lead into halftime only to have Marian score five points in the final 36 seconds to tie the game at 33-33 heading into the break. Senior Will Olewinski banked a three-pointer at the buzzer to close out the half.
Out of the break, Marian found life from beyond the arc as they used a 9-2 run to open up a 44-35 lead. The Eagles managed to retake the lead with 11:26 mark only to have another Olewinski three-pointer give Marian a 51-49 edge. The Sabres held this lead for a while before the Eagles used a quick 5-0 run to take a 61-59 advantage with 3:33 left to play.
From there, Marian went on an 8-2 spurt to take the lead for good. Sophomore Logan Hamilton would score six points for the Sabres in the final 45 seconds to ice the victory.
Marian finished the game shooting 27-58 (.466) from the field including 10-25 (.400) from behind the arc.
Hamilton and senior Tyrese Pinson each had a team-high 15 points, while Olewinski went 4-8 (.500) from beyond the arc for 12 points. Pinson also added seven rebounds to go with two assists and five steals.
Marian remains in NACC play traveling to Concordia Chicago for a 5 p.m. tip Tuesday, November 27.
