Marian University men’s basketball (4-8, 2-5 NACC) opened the second half of their season with a 74-72 victory over Dominican in NACC action.
The Stars opened with a slim 19-18 lead in the game before Marian went on a 12-3 run to take a 30-22 advantage with 9:46 left in the first half. After Dominican trimmed the lead down to five the Sabres would score eight-consecutive points to take their biggest lead of the half at 38-25 with 5:56 remaining in the opening stanza. Dominican would trim the Marian lead heading into halftime but the Sabres still took a 44-38 lead into the locker rooms.
Both offenses were firing on all cylinders in the first half with Marian shooting 16-30 (.533) from the field including 9-16 (.563) from beyond the arc.
The Sabres opened the second half fast going on a 12-4 run to extend their lead out to 56-42 with 12:30 left to play, their largest lead of the game. The Stars slowly battled back going on an extended 20-8 run to trim their lead down to two at 64-62 with 6:15 left to play.
Shortly after the Stars would score seven-consecutive points to take their first lead of the second half at 69-66 with 3:13 left in the action. Marian made sure the Dominican lead didn’t last long, however, as the Sabres immediately used seven unanswered points to take the lead for good at 73-69 with 1:11 left to play.
The Stars still had an opportunity to tie the game in the final possession but a steal from sophomore Caleb Martin in the final seconds sealed the 74-72 Marian victory.
The Sabres finished the game shooting 25-53 (.472) with a season-high 52.4-percent shooting percentage from three-point land, or 11-21.
Four players finished in double-figures for Marian led by senior Kelvin Jones who posted 14 points off the bench. Junior Trentin Fouse also came off the bench to score 12 points, while sophomore Tavaris McCullough finished with 12 points and senior Tyrese Pinson chipped in 10 points. Defensively, Pinson added three steals and along with freshman Scott Paulus had a team-high five rebounds.
